PER GLADIUM NOSTRUM

The Black Swords came into existence in the beginning of the Indomitus Crusade, one of the lesser known successes of the Ultima founding.

Originally a company of Unnumbered Sons hailing from the gene-seed of the loyal Imperial Fist Primarch Rogal Dorn, it came as no surprise when these Space Marines displayed a natural inclination towards crusading-style duty.

Their initial purpose was one of delivery, to ensure protection and transport of a sacred relic. This relic was a weapon sanctified and prepared by the High priests of Holy Terra, to be delivered to the new High Marshal of the Black Templars, who were about to commence on a new crusade within the South-Eastern quadrant of Imperial Space. This gesture was also an attempt by Holy Terra and Lord Commander of the Imperium, and Imperial Regent, Roboute Guilliman to have the Templars join their fellow gene-brothers of their Primarch Rogal Dorn in accepting the new Primaris marines within their ranks and strengthen the Templar’s forces within this new age of the Imperium. The Black Templars, who up until this point, had been wary of the resurrected Primarch and his new technology developed with Archmagos Belisarius Cawl.

A SACRED MISSION

Whilst the duty was a solemn and important one, it did not necessitate a fully fledged crusade to be formed for it. It was decided that a single battle barge, the “Obsidian Heart” would be given the honour, and was appropriately prepared for departure. Alongside the barge there were a number of smaller support craft, including supply ships and moderately armed frigates, in total forming up a small fleet. And lastly, deployed to The Obsidian Heart itself, was a full company of Unnumbered Sons; one hundred of the finest Primaris all drawn from the Imperial Fist gene-line, and awaiting their first full crusade.

Thus prepared, the Navigators of the Obsidian Heart plotted a course to the High Marshall’s current location, in the Kalius Sector, where his Crusade was momentarily pausing whilst planning their next moves. As with all transitions to the warp, the Navigators maintain a constant vigilance on conditions, as even the slightest change in the eddies and whorls could spell disaster for a vessel.

As it so happened, moments before the transition was initiated, the Navigators sensed a distinct change in the warp tide, and altered their course plan accordingly, an act designed to ride the changed currents, and see the travel proceed smoothly.

But it was not to be. Whilst the course change made for a cleaner entry into the warp, and no vessels were harmed or compromised, the resulting tidal effect dragged the fleet in a different direction. The Navigators worked tirelessly to steer the vessels as best they could, but only so much force can be exerted over the realm of Chaos itself. After what had seemed to be a routine if not difficult to navigate warp jump, the Obsidian Heart exited into real space, at its predetermined destination. A quick scan and review of the sector provided a startling revelation to the fleet: Whilst a short warp jump of only a few weeks, over a century of time had passed and a once secured Imperial system was now overrun with an infestation of the greenskin Xenos race; The Orks.
A SYSTEM IN DESPAIR

Entire planets, sub-stations and more within the system had been overrun by the savage race. Defences had been demolished, Colonies and outposts razed to the ground, the asteroid-sized mining operations torn asunder – like a green wave, the Orks had flooded through and around every obstacle in their way. But for all their destruction, they were moving slowly – their vessels were being used primarily to crash into their next targets, and then a new vessel was required. This had meant that whilst inexorable, the planets that were currently on the far side of the system had a short while before they would find themselves targets. On these far-flung planets, and in the shadowy refuges of the ruined worlds, followers of the God Emperor were hoping their prayers would one day be answered, and that His Angels would be sent to save them from the green destructive plague.

Reeling from the shock of the lost time, the Obsidian Heart was barely able to respond in time to an attack launched by the surprised but ever ready for battle Orks. Barrages of devastating short range cannon fire punched holes clear through the hull, scattering debris and unfortunate crew out into the vastness of space. This lightning attack left the vessel adrift, no power and no hope for repair. At the captain’s command, the Marines abandoned the battle barge, swiftly evacuating their personnel and supplies were possible, to the landers that were rapidly being prepped for departure. Amongst the supplies being gathered were the holy relic destined for delivery, the Marines still putting their mission first as they moved to escape the impending destruction of the Obsidian Heart. As quickly as possible, the Thunderhawks left their launch bays and ferried the remains of the Crusade towards the nearest planet, a green world designated Sable VII.
BATTLE OF ETON REACH

Still taking heavy fire from Ork attacks, the Thunderhawk gunship landed ablaze and was severely damaged in the once holy city of Eton Reach.

The Astra Primaris lead by their Unnumbered Sons’ Captain Augustus Gladius, took matters into his own hands, using the strategies of that of their gene-father Rogal Dorn, taught to them in stasis, enacted a plan in fortifying themselves with the gothic ruins of the city of Eton Reach, and let the savages come to them while they wait for reinforcements.

For what seemed like endless waves of greenskin attacks, the Space Marines now stood, fighting off assault after assault of feral Xenos who were using their savage weapons and brute firepower to try and wipe out these warriors of the Imperium.

Outnumbered several times over, their bolter rounds quickly depleted, and the purple glow of their plasma cells for their plasma fuelled weapons all but drained, the Marines had to resort to fighting in brutal hand to hand combat using their field combat knives, chainswords, and powerswords roaring and crackling with energy with every impact made with only the defence of their Mark X power armour to protect them.

After days of battle, with no answer to their distress calls, no sign of reinforcements, and with countless battle brothers lost. Only half the units that arrived in their thunderhawks still stood fighting alongside their Captain.

During the fierce battle heroes of the company and their brave acts inspired their battle brothers to keep fighting, including; Sargent Franz Lorentz of the 4th Assault Intercessors whose Power Sword had ended the lives of numerous Orks, Battle Brother Niko Tempust of the 1st Intercessors who had single handedly taken down an Ork Nob with his field combat knife, and Lieutenant Ferrus, a decorated soldier with terminator honors who held off a squad of greenskins single handedly on the Northern side of the crashed Thunderhawk protecting the relic on board.
A BEACON OF HOPE

With the Ork Waaagh numbers starting to overwhelm the marines, a hum of activity was heard on the comms communication had finally been reached and finally answered by the other Thunderhawk Gunships. The rest of the company had found them and were on their way. With reinforcements finally arriving in their darkest hour. Two Thunderhawk gunships, ablaze with damaged they had sustained in their journey planetside, joined their brothers on the battlefield, burning through the teal blue atmosphere of the planet, flanking the Ork mobs on either side. Just as the Greenskins had begin their latest assault.

Without any warning from the upper atmosphere, a burning light shot through the sky like a spear from the heavens, tearing through the clouds. A homing beacon, hummed as it darted through the air, spiking into the ground in front of Captain Gadius with pinpoint accuracy.

A unit of battle hardened Terminators teleporting onto the beacon, Covered in yellow and markings of a black fist on a field of white, The Imperial Fists Chapter had reached the sector and had come to their aid. Tearing through the remaining greenskins with their storm bolter fire, carving through waves of Orks with their powerswords and crushing blows of Thunderhammers. The Orks had finally been wiped out, unable to take on the sheer extra number of marines joining the standoff.

With the battle over, It was time for the company apothecary and his servo skulls to now scoured the battlefield for the gene seed of their fallen brothers.
FAILURE TO DELIVER

With the relic safely secured with the arrival of the Imperial Fist 3rd Company coming to their call for assistance and clearing out the remaining Ork threat from around the ruined city of Etor Reach. Captain Gladius was Informed by their Imperial Fist brothers that their company of unnumbered sons were thought lost in the Warp to the twisted powers of Chaos.

With lack of communication and with the Imperial Psykers on Holy Terra unable to locate them within the galaxy, they were marked in the Imperial records as lost.

In their absence a new replacement sword for the Templars had been forged back on Holy Terra, and safely delivered in time for Templar’s crusade by another company of marines. The Unnumbered Sons’ mission was ruled a failure and a great discrace to their company. Covered in the green blood of the Orks, their Mark X armour heavily battered and damaged, their next move was to take pennance for their sins.
A NEW FOUNDING

With the threat of the Xenos still high in the system. Captain Gladius and his remaining company of Unnumbered Sons were sanctioned by the High Lords of Terra and by the Imperial Regent to found a new Chapter monastery on Sable VII at the site of the battle of Eton Reach, their first orders were issued; protect the Sable sector and the holy relic in their possession and for it to be their namesake;

The Black Swords had been forged.

CHAPTER HOME WORLD

SABLE VII – HOMEWORLD OF THE BLACK SWORDS

Sable VII had been a thriving agricultural world when the Imperium first settled on it. A rarity in the south-eastern sectors, it had a single major continent that covered 75% of the entire planet, the lush forests and rolling hills having been a wondrous natural cover for the other resource Sable presented: an abundance of rare elements buried deep in its crust. Unusually for an Imperial mining operation, the planet was not turned into a giant collection of mining industry and refinement plants. Because of the nature of the ores, it was actually cheaper for the ore to be extracted and worked off-planet, leaving the majority of the continent in its original conditions. The green rolling hills and mountain ranges were interspersed with smaller mines, and gothic structures erected by the Imperium, thanking the God-Emperor for this valuable world.

From the planet’s depths the Imperium had mined two of the planet’s primary exports; the beautiful, bone-white marble interlaced with gold veins from the eastern edge of the continent, used throughout the Imperium to build Imperial Shrines and Monastery throughout the galaxy, and the other…Onyxium. A strangely light and initially useless mineral found near the planet’s western volcanic region, it was presumed to be a byproduct of the process that would plume metallic black ash into the atmosphere from the planet’s core.

In its raw form, it was a glassy, somewhat restricted alloy, but when forged under extreme heat, the crystalline composition would restructure into a metal that once set, would become almost unbreakable, bearing a jet black appearance and shimmering like glass.

SoLBLADE BLACK SWORDS

Solblades are small, rapid-response Imperial fleets dispatched during the Fourth Tyrannic War, to attack the Leviathan tendrils Nautilon and Promethor, which have invaded Segmentum Pacificus. They were created and utlised by the more specialised forces of the Imperium in an attempt to combat key leviathan targets.

The Black Swords have dispatched their 5th Company consisting of Strike Cruiser: Dacicus and three escort ships to join other Solbade fleets in the Turbidious Sector to help erradicate the Xenos. These ships were kindly painted by Turbidious.

INSIGNIUM ASTARTES

CHAPTER COLOURS

The Black Swords Space Marine Chapter have been designated the split colours of Black and White on their armour plating. A reflection of their founding planet and history.

The Alabaster white armour half reflects the cold, white marble with gold vein, mined deep within the Eastern edge of the continent of their Chapter’s planet; Sable VII. Battle hardened marines who are stubborn and indomitable in their Rogal Dorn style siege tactics.

The Sable black half of their armour, representing the Onyxium which is forged from the volcanic ash found in the western volcanic region, used to forge their black power weapons and a sign of mourning and shame they carry for their fallen brothers, and failing their mission of delivering the holy relic to their crusading gene-brothers.

The emerald green chest aquila that is blazen across the chest carapace of their power armour, symbolises a beacon of loyalty and devotion to the Emperor of Mankind and hope of one day having redemption for their failure.

CHAPTER ICON

Their chapter icon, a Black Sword, their Holy Relic they are sworn to protect on a field of Azure white, with stylised black wings on either side.

HELMET CONFIGURATION

The Sergeants of the chapter colours diverge slightly from the traditional Codex Astartes, replacing the red helmet with that of emerald green, matching the ork blood that stained the surviving Unnumbered Son’s armour during the battle of Eton Reach.

When a battle brother veteran reaches the rank of Captain within the Chapter they dawn a golden helmet with a black sword on the forehead of their helmet.

COMPANY BADGES

Carried on the right knee of each Primaris Marine, the Company badges of the chapter are broken down into different layouts rather than significant colors assigned to each company. This technique helps with them to look even closer cohesive on the battlefield, but with enough variation for battle brothers of the chapter to know the significance of each marking.

1ST COMPANY

VETERAN COMPANY

The battle hardened veterans of the Chapter. The 1st company are lead by their Captain Augustus Galdium. A hardened veteran who was originally the Captain of the Unnumbered Son’s Company who survived the Battle of Eton Reach. He has seen the birth of the Chapter first hand, and with that, having to bear the weight of the dishonour of failing their holy duties of delivering the Black Sword to the Black Templars. A fierce commander with tactical precision, he has led the charge in taking back several worlds within the Sable system at the beginning of the Sable Unification campaign.

Dawning his sacred terminator armour into battle, Captain Gladium leads his brothers into battle wielding his Master crafter Power Weapon “Darkness” made of pure Onyxium.

The 1st Company also bears a second ancient within their ranks. Terminator Ancient Kerykes is armed with a storm bolter and a power sword made of Onyxium. He leads his fellow terminators into battle in times of need bearing the sacred winged holy sigil of Orion the Protector. Scribes of the chapter have records of a robed man, calling himself Orion who was said to have appeared out of the shadows and lead the space marines of the Chapter during the Assault on the White Halls. wielding a primitive black Onyxium blade, his navigation through the labyrinth of the underground citadel and taking out Orks hiding within the hallways and disarming their traps with precision ahead of the marines, leading them safely through the maze and to the pure Onyxium reserves and ancient refinery hidden deep under the planets surface. After the safe passage, Orion was said to have vanished without a trace.

The 1st company ranks are made up of the chapter’s most battle hardened veterans. Consisting of multiple squads of both Terminators and Assault Terminators, and Sternguard Veterans.

The sacred protectors of their Keep; The Sable Knights, are a unit of specialty trained Bladeguard who have been dedicated to protecting the halls of their Chapter Monastery at Eton Reach and the sacred relic holy Black Sword in their possession at all costs. Trained in close quarters combat to be the last line of defence from foes of the Imperium at all costs.

The care of the 1st Company’s holy Terminator and Tacticus grade armour worn the Veterans of the Chapter are overseen and maintained by the Chapter serifs, These natives of Sable VI cover themselves in hooded purple robes, known be invisible to Orks. These robes help hide them from the green skinned Xenos who had terrorised their home planet for the length of a Sol century. These devotees of the Chapter show their thanks for being saved by serving in all the duties required by Serifs of a Space Marine Chapter. During battle they are known to follow behind the Astartes carrying sacred relics and chanting Imperial hymns.

The company badge of the 1st is a horizontally split scheme of white and emerald green. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

2ND COMPANY

BATTLE COMPANY

Led by Captain Nathanel Ferrus, Master of the Watch. The 2nd Company of Black Swords is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice and protect their homeworld of Sable VII.

The 2nd Company’s ranks are home to the newly introduced Infernus squad who have trained with the Salamander Chapter in becoming familiar with their new Pyroblasters to help eliminate hoards of Xenos with cleansing fire.

The company badge of the 2nd consists of a white arrow pointing north on a field of emerald green. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate.

3RD COMPANY

BATTLE COMPANY

The commander of the 3rd Company, Captain Angelus Rullus. A decorated battle brother originating from the 2nd Company. He was given command of the 3rd Company and title Master of the Arsenal. He was quickly promoted after the previous Captain Marcus’s assasination.

When leading his battle company, Captain Rullus insists that the Primaris marines under his command are trained extensively in the use of plasma weaponry. The 3rd Company Sergeants are rarely seen not wielding plasma pistols, and beyond the battleline units, the company is made up of two units of Hellblasters, and two aggressor units wielding plasma exterminators.

The 3rd company badge is displayed as a horizontal white stripe on an emerald green background. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

4TH COMPANY

BATTLE COMPANY

The 4th Company lead by Captain Nem Dakkar; Master of the Fleet are currently offworld aboard a Solblades detachment. a small, rapid-response Imperial fleet dispatched during the Fourth Tyrannic War, to attack the Leviathan tendrils Nautilon and Promethor, which have invaded Segmentum Pacificus. Utilised by the more specialised forces of the Imperium in an attempt to combat key leviathan targets. BATTLE COMPANY

Master of the Marches and 5th Company Captain Joral Hawkins. Known for his booming commanding voice he casts by the way of his vox Servitors amongst the ranks of the Chapter to ready any battle company at a moments notice when the Chapter Master demands.

The 5th company badge is represented with a quartered badge of white and emerald green. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

6TH COMPANY

RESERVE COMPANY

Overseer for all the reserve companies along with being Master of Rites, 6th Company Captain Don Merndian is entrusted with preserving the Chapter’s sacred marital traditions and rituals, especially with the Battle brothers moving up within the Companies ranks.

Although the 6th Company is predominantly stationed entirely on the homeworld of Sable VII. Overseeing the other reserve battle companies and helping with the training of scout initiates in the 10th company. They are known as the peacekeepers of the Chapter. Sent to settle small disputes within the Sable system often with eliminating any threat to the Imperium with extreme prejudice.

The 6th company badge is represented with a horizontally split scheme of purple above white. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

7TH COMPANY

RESERVE COMPANY

Known for their fast attack manoeuvres and training in the treacherous terrain of the western Volcanic region of their homeworld Sable VII. Captain Lucius Septima of the 7th Company advances into any conflict with speed and accuracy.

Equipped with Tacticus armour with Jump Packs or in Phobos class Mark X armour. The 7th Company is also the only company equipped with the only Outrider units within the Chapter. These Outrider bikes have been heavily modified with anti-grav technology to allow them to traverse any terrain with ease.

The company badge of the 7th consists of a purple arrow pointing north on a white field. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate and company banner.

8TH COMPANY

RESERVE COMPANY

Found protecting the White Halls deep under the eastern forest rangers surface of Sable VII, lead by the Master of the Forge, Captain Brutus Lipen trains his company in the necessary close combat rituals and practices of the Chapter. Fighting and training within the cramped corridors of the White Halls preparing Marines for combat within the tight confines of the corridors of a space hulk or trench warfare. These battle brothers oversee the sacred forging by the native Sablelites of the planet of the Onyixum blades that are distributed and used throughout the Chapter.

The 8th company badge is displayed as a horizontal purple stripe on white background. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

9TH COMPANY

RESERVE COMPANY

Captain Novian Primus of the 9th Company. Master of Relics of the Chapter, leads his company in protecting Eton Reach on Sable VII. When not called upon and deployed into battle. Astartes of the 9th Company are serving their Chapter by protecting their Homeworld Monastery and it’s Relics thats house within it’s walls.

9TH COMPANY

VANGUARD COMPANY

Master of Recruits and 10th Company Captain Orious Xen, a veteran of the Battle of Eton Reach. He is tasked with training all new scout initiates within the Chapter. While many don’t usually survive the unforgiving training within the western volcanic region of Sable VII’s. Majority of initiates before they cross the Rubicon and become full Primaris Space Marines are known to wear rebreathers or full helmets due to the deadly environment in which they train during their grueling time within the ranks of the 10th company.

The 10th company badge is represented with a quartered badge of purple and white. This is commonly represented on a Black Swords Space Marine’s right knee armour plate, and reflected in their Company banner.

IMPERIAL FISTS SPACE MARINE CHAPTER

It was the 3rd Company of Imperial Fists who helped the stranded Unnumbered Sons make first contact again with the Imperium when discovered on Sable VII. The Black Swords have sworn to answer their call when their gene-brothers’ which they have now done on several occasions.

ABOUT ME

HELLO THERE

Born and raised Melbourne, Australia … and STILL living here. I’ve been a gamer my whole life in one form or another.

I was raised playing video games like Super Mario Bros. & Legend of Zelda on the NES as a kid, moving to recent titles like Halo and Destiny in adulthood.

Gaming didn’t stop at the console however. I really enjoyed painting and playing games on the tabletop like Warhammer 40k, Mordheim & Blood Bowl too. But sadly I said goodbye to wargaming hobby in the early 2000’s.

Now, after nearly 20 years absences from the hobby, I’m picking up the paintbrush again and having a go at painting the custom space marine chapter I started all those years ago back in 3rd edition of W40k.

FRIENDS OF THE CHAPTER

CUSTOM DICE SET FROM NICK

Returning back to the hobby was a daunting decision for me to make, this was however made so much easier by my great friend Nick. Nick and I used to work together a lifetime ago, spending our time discussing all things Warhammer. We have stayed closed friends since those days and during the end of the the 4th lockdown here in Melbourne, I started putting out there that I was interested in getting back into the hobby and reviving my space marine chapter.

He has guided me through all the new material, answered all my questions while I catch up on 20 years of information and shared my painting progress with endless photos. Amongst all the chaos he has shown up and gifted me a set of custom dice to use!

With a beautiful ivory and gold colour and using my Black Swords symbol in the place of the number 6, I am simply blown away by how incredible these dice are. Thank you Nick!

I’m still in shock! Mike from Flashing Badger Painting surprised me with a custom McFarlane Space Marine painted in the colours of my home brew chapter; The Black Swords.

He has done such an amazing job to match my colour scheme perfectly from only looking at images I had posted. His freehand work of my chapter badge and airbrush work is incredible! I cannot thank him enough for sending me such an amazing gift!

BLACK SWORDS DIORAMA BY TIM

During May 2025 I was part of the Painting Platypus Palooza Miniature Exchange Program.

This was a fun idea on the Flashing Badger Discord server to connect with others on the server and paint models for another person.

The idea was to paint a single space marine for the person you were partnered with in their army’s chapter colours, and send it over to them.

Tim didn’t follow the brief. He painted a WHOLE DIORAMA with custom 3D printed bits and sculpts he had commissioned. He did an incredible job painting these miniatures in my Black Swords colour scheme and inspiring me to add even more lore to my Chapter. Thank you so much Tim! You absolutely spoilt me!

As apart of expanding Solblade force, Tom kindly painted up my Black Swords on this Strike Cruiser and escort ships in my colour scheme to join the ranks of other vessels! Wow! He did an incredible job!
